About the Studio & its Policy

Resonations Studio is a private studio that provides individual piano/keyboard lessons and workshops in world music (coming soon!) to students of all levels, ages 4+ through 94+.

Resonations is an outgrowth of its founder-director's vision to gently engender a deep understanding of and respect for the musical traditions of world cultures, so expect to learn a wide range of repertoire from Western Classical music to Popular Music to Jazz to World Music. The instructor leads students to this goal by cultivating an appreciation for music in historical and cultural perspectives, developing students' skills in music literacy, musicianship, and creativity in fun and engaging ways through the studio's comprehensive teaching methodology.

Whether new to the piano or a continuing student, the studio guides you to your goals at performance, technique & scales, sight-reading & theory, composition & improvisation, and offers workshops on Garage Band (Ableton coming soon) & Finale. Transcribing, copyrighting original material, and customizing music not available at your playing level is another added feature Vasana de Mel provides.

Students have opportunities to perform several times, and in multiple venues, annual to demonstrate their progress, and are also given opportunities to participate in competitions and prestigious credentialing forums, such as the National Piano Guild Auditions.

MAKE-UP POLICY
Please note that you are paying for a specific day-time slot that you and the teacher agree to on a semesterly or yearly basis. Thus missing lesson(s) generally amounts to forfeiting lesson(s). There will be no refunds for weather related absences nor any adjusted monthly payments for missed lessons by students. In cases of emergencies, e.g. extended illnesses or family crisis’, a maximum of one make-up lesson could be accommodated, depending on studio space availability per that semester. If the teacher cancels a lesson, a payment adjustment/or credit will be applied for the subsequent month’s tuition. Since tuition is based on a generalized 4 week month with no charge for a 5th week (when it occurs), no payment adjustments will be applied if either the student or teacher cancels one lesson during a 5 week month.

TERMINATION OF LESSONS
Prior notification of termination is requested, a month in advance from students please. In vein with the policies of schools, recreation centers, and other extra-curricular activities, Resonations Studio does not refund unused lessons should a student fail to attend regularly scheduled piano classes and then drop out. The teacher reserves the right to terminate students for non-compliance with the studio’s policies.

ASSIGNMENTS AND PRACTICE
Assignments that are noted in the student’s piano notebook should be completed before each lesson. To this end, a routine daily practice is expected from all students as the basis for progress through the various levels of practical and theory competence. Regular, daily practice of about 10 to 15 minutes (if beginner) is preferred over irregular and crammed practice sessions prior to weekly piano lessons! Intermediate & advanced students are expected to practice about 45 minutes to 1 hour, daily.
Parents, in considering the importance of your commitment to your child's success as a pianist and musician, please provide a quiet practice environment.

RECITALS
Please note that the student’s participation in the annual studio recital is as important as their participation in piano competitions & festivals, and other extra-curricular activities. A formal “Recital” (with parents and guests in attendance) is held once or twice a year in Dec./May. Expect written notification of the time and location of the annual recital in the months prior to the event. Please also expect at least one rehearsal, about 2 hours in length prior to the event, at the Littleton location.

COMMUNICATION AND CULTURAL OPPORTUNITIES
A weekly assignment in the student’s piano notebook, indicating their progress and weekly goals, is sent home with the student. Parents/students may call the teacher from 8:30am to 1:30pm with any questions. Parent-teacher conferences are available upon request.

It is also important that students listen to canonical Western Classical, Jazz, and Popular piano repertoire on radio, YouTube, or other media and attend free or ticketed concerts whenever possible.

MUSIC FESTIVALS, COMPETITIONS, & INSTITUTIONAL EXAMINATIONS
Columbine Music Teachers’ Association events (Fall Recital, Celebration Series, Holiday on the Keys at SW Plaza Mall & Starbucks, Boys Recital, Achievement Day, Adult Recital), Music Teachers’ National Association Performance or Composition competitions, the National Piano Guild Auditions (certification), local music festivals, US "AP Music Theory" and UK ABRSM Theory certification are some of the regular events in this locale. You will be billed separately for each event that you choose to participate in and those funds sent along to the events coordinator(s). As preparation for participation in any of the above events could require an extra 15-30 minutes increase in lesson time, please notify the teacher of your interest in these activities well in advance in order to register, audition (if necessary), and rehearse.
